There is a unique story behind each Wind Phone that is best told by its creator and/or steward. No one can tell it the way they can, so to that end, the format for Featured Wind Phone stories is to share the creator/steward's responses to the interview questions verbatim in their own voice. Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

Our Featured Wind Phone is in Charlottesville, Virginia. Hospice of the Piedmont, in partnership with Albemarle Parks and Recreation created and placed this gorgeous Wind Phone in Darden Towe Park "to provide comfort and reflection to all who are navigating grief." Thank you to Hannah, for sharing Hospice of the Piedmont's Wind Phone with us.

What year and month did you place your Wind Phone at this location?

Our Wind Phone was installed in November 2024.

Why did you choose this location?

Darden Towe Park is a 113-acre park located in northern Charlottesville along the east bank of the Rivanna River. With miles of walking trails, river access, a dog park, playground, athletic fields, bird-watching opportunities, a Free Little Library, and picnic areas, Darden Towe Park offers something for everyone in the community. Hospice of the Piedmont, in partnership with Albemarle Parks and Recreation, selected this location for the wind phone due to its accessibility for individuals with small children or those using assistive devices. While easily accessible, the wind phone is set slightly off the main walking path, providing users with privacy and beautiful views of the river.

Is your Wind Phone is dedicated to or in memory of someone special?

Grief is something we have or will all experience. It affects us physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. As a nonprofit hospice, helping people heal from their grief is an integral part of what we do. Hospice of the Piedmont offers one-on-one counseling to the families of our patients and provides support groups for adults and children, even if they have not used our hospice services.

We understand that people process grief in different ways, and that not everyone is comfortable with sharing their experience with others. This is one of the reasons that we are so excited about this new resource being available for those who would like to process their grief by themselves. The Wind Phone gives those who need solitude a chance to process their grief, while the location in Darden Towe allows them to still feel part of a supportive community.
