Every Wind Phone holds a story, one that is best told by the person who created or cares for it. No one can share it quite the way they can. For that reason, Featured Wind Phone stories are presented in the creator or steward’s own words, shared just as they were written. When we share our stories, we create connection, offer comfort, and sometimes inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone of their own.

Our Featured Wind Phone is in Safford, Arizona
This Wind Phone was created through profound love and unimaginable loss; it stands as a deeply personal gift from one grieving friend to an entire community. After losing his dear friend Jeremy and Jeremy’s three sons in a tragic plane crash in June 2025, Max, the creator poured his heart into building this sacred space where he and others could grieve, reflect, and feel close to those they have lost. From carefully constructing the phone in Ohio to transporting it back to his hometown of Safford, every step was guided by remembrance, healing, and hope. I am incredibly grateful that Max chose to share both his story and this beautiful Wind Phone with others. While no words can ease the sorrow of such a devastating loss, this Wind Phone will undoubtedly bring comfort, peace, and connection to many people for years to come.

What year and month did you place your Wind Phone at this location?
The phone was placed in November of 2025.
Why did you choose this location?
The cemetery is private land, and I have a friend who rests there. I’d been there for his service and remembered the wonderful view of Mt Graham. I now live in Ohio and built the wind phone here before driving it out for placement. When I arrived back at the location, I was amazed by how much detail I had forgotten. The view of the mountain is incredible, but you can also see the entire river valley and mountains to the North, most of the town of Safford, and 360-degree views of the desert. Another unexpected and wonderful detail was the ability to see the cars silently traveling on Hwy 70. My friend who inspired me to build the wind phone was a driver and see the open road without the noise was perfect in my mind.
Is your Wind Phone dedicated or in memory of someone special?
My friend Jeremy and his three sons were departing San Diego International Airport in a private plane on June 8, 2025. They’d taken the trip to San Diego the day before, to see a comedy show given as a Christmas gift to the boys. Upon departure, their pilot became disoriented in the Pacific Ocean marine layer and crashed into the ocean. The pilot, his wife, Jeremy, Bailey, Gavin, and Ayden were all lost.
Jeremy was an incredible father, husband, community member, entrepreneur, and friend. Losing him so suddenly has affected me tremendously and about a month afterwards my wife suggested we build a Wind Phone to help with my grief. I immediately agreed and added it had to be done before the end of the year, and it had to be in Safford. I hoped that planning, building, transporting, and installing the wind phone in my hometown would help me with my struggle. And that it being in my hometown would give the people in the area, who not only bear the loss of these six but anyone they’ve lost, a way to mourn, and be at peace.
